Mackinac Island, a step back in time. Mackinac Island
Our next morning, we boarded a ferry to the ever-famous Mackinaw Island. It may be cliché but from the moment you step foot onto the island it does feel like you step back into time. No cars, Victorian houses lining the streets, perfectly perfect flowers among white picket fences, bikes and horses whirling past; it’s hard not to capture the energy and life of its simplicity. First stop. Bike rental. Next stop Visitor’s Center.
You can easily spend two days here just on the island; but with one day and so much to see renting bikes and taking the 8-mile tour around the island fit our day perfectly. Is there a better feeling than pedaling in light 70-degree temperatures along true blue-green water? I’d argue to say no!
True freedom at your own pace will lead you to our first stop; Arch Rock. Over 207 steps to the top of this amazing rock formation which spans over 50 wide and towers above the water giving way to far stretching views.
I still cannot believe the peaceful Victorian homes nestled in the trees, park benches, people swimming, the history and battle sites, the Fort, the Grand Hotel and the adorable little shops that make up this island. Do not leave without fudge, they should make a sticker that says that. Sample the fudge. All the fudge you can handle. We sampled and bought out Ryba’s fudge on our way out, boarded the ferry and headed back to Mackinaw Mill. Cooper casted away fishing and swimming until dark while Phil and I made a campfire on the beach and watch the sunset. If only we had one more day at this magnificent place!
