Tahquamenon Falls

Here we go! Hauling our camper across the Big Mack! It's the longest suspension bridge in the United States! Do you still hold your breath when you cross a bridge? I didn't last long across this mighty one! Crossing the Big Mack with a camper in tow made the route all the more adventurous and memorable and I remember thinking...we did it, we really crossed it!

Coastal highways and amazing boating towns entertained our trip up north to the Upper Peninsula. If you have the time stop at any of these great towns I am sure they will not disappoint, but as you know parking can be a bit trying towing a large camper! Torch Lake is also up this way and I hear you will feel like you are right in the Caribbean with the crystal clear water! I so wanted to add it to the list. There are entire Instagram feeds on Torch Lake and celebrities like Kid Rock and Eminem vacation there; so yeah...kind of a big deal. I tell you what though; when we passed the sign for Torch Lake you'd be surprised that there is a hidden turquoise celebrity sighting lake up this way! I not so subtly hinted we should take a slight detour but alas we stuck to our route.

The further north we drove the more remote it became until we pulled in our nightly pit stop at Kritter’s Northcountry Campground. This was a last-minute fill in booking but I liked the quaintness and spacious sites at this campground. The sites are very open with plenty of room from the neighbors, the hosts are gracious, the laundry room clean and the whole park is set in a sort of circle with outer trails. It was a quick set up at the campsite before setting out to Tahquamenon Falls. The mighty falls encompass over 50 acres and stretches over 13 miles in length! The Upper Falls nicknamed Root beer Falls is one the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. It has a drop of nearly 50 feet and is more than 200 feet across. That's a lot of Root beer Flowing! A maximum flow of more than 50,000 gallons of water per second has been recorded cascading over these falls. Four miles downstream is the Lower Falls, a series of five smaller falls cascading around an island. Both are equally magnificent! It’s a short distance to view the falls from different vantage points. Of course we had to stop by the concessions for a Root beer Float! We did make a quick stop at the Lower Falls; many things to do here including renting a boat and swimming in the lower falls! Our camping neighbors for the night were a sweet elderly couple in a new vintage style camper and they had spent the day wading at the lower falls and truly enjoyed it! They were a dear couple and we loved their stories!

After that little tour we traveled 22 miles to Whitefish Point Lighthouse. Whitefish Point is located at the extreme southeastern end of Lake Superior. It is a critical turning point for all vessel traffic entering and leaving this largest of all the Great Lakes. History and Lighthouses...pretty remarkable! Phil and Cooper walked to the beach and examined the rocks and surroundings while I walked the grounds. Restaurant tip! Head to Brown Fisheries when you are done with your tour! Fish and chips are amazing here!
